Sta-Rite System 3 Modular D.E. Filters - 1 Year Component Warranty

Modular Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) Filter System

Sta-Rite System 3® Modular D.E. Filters bring the exceptional water clarity of Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) filtration to your pool with a user-friendly modular design. These filters (part of the Pentair family) are engineered for balanced flow and feature an integral manifold, maximizing filtration performance and extending the time between cleanings. The modular internal components make servicing easier than traditional D.E. grid filters, providing sparkling clear water with greater convenience for in-ground pools and spas.

  • Superior D.E. Filtration: Delivers the highest level of water clarity by filtering out microscopic particles, often down to 3-5 microns.
  • Modular Design: Internal filter media modules (cartridge-like elements that hold D.E.) are easier to remove and clean than individual grids in traditional D.E. filters.
  • Balanced Flow Hydraulics: Ensures even distribution of water across the D.E. media for optimal performance and extended filter cycles.
  • Durable Tank: Constructed from corrosion-resistant, heavy-duty materials (often Dura-Glas™ glass-reinforced composite resin) for long service life and weather resistance.
  • Easy Maintenance: The design allows for simpler disassembly and cleaning of the D.E. modules. The filter lid can often be removed to hose off elements in place, or modules can be taken out for more thorough cleaning.

Key features and operational notes for Sta-Rite System 3® Modular D.E. Filters:

  • Modular Media Concept: Utilizes easily manageable filter modules which are coated with D.E. powder. This offers a large surface area for efficient dirt capture.
  • Posi-Lok™ Clamps (on some models): Provide safe, secure, and easy access to the filter tank internals for maintenance.
  • Cleaning Process: While some setups might allow for backwashing (if equipped with an appropriate multiport valve, sold separately), these filters are primarily designed for periodic disassembly where the modules are removed and hosed clean. The tank can then be rinsed out.
  • D.E. Application: After cleaning and reassembly, a fresh charge of D.E. powder must be mixed into a slurry and added to the filter (typically via the pool skimmer with the pump running) to pre-coat the modules.
  • Dual Drain Plugs (on some models): May feature a side plug for convenient plumbing to waste and a bottom plug for complete filter draining during cleaning or winterization.
  • Integral Manifold Design: Ensures even water distribution to all modules and efficient collection of filtered water, enhancing overall filtration effectiveness.

Technical specifications for Sta-Rite System 3® Modular D.E. Filters (common SMD Series models):

Model (Example) Effective Filtration Area (Sq Ft) Design Flow Rate (GPM) D.E. Required (Lbs) Turnover (8hr) (gallons)
S7MD60 60 Up to 120 (system dependent) 6 Up to 57,600
S7MD72 72 Up to 144 (system dependent) 7.2 Up to 69,120
S8MD60 (Older SD series similar, e.g., S8D110 had ~53 sq ft) (Varies by specific S8MD model) (Varies by specific S8MD model) (Varies) (Varies)
  • Filter Type: Modular Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.).
  • Tank Material: Durable, corrosion-resistant composite resin (e.g., Dura-Glas™ or similar glass-reinforced thermoplastic).
  • Plumbing Size: Typically 2-inch connections for optimal flow.
  • Maximum Operating Pressure: 50 PSI.
  • Valve Requirement: A multiport valve or slide valve (sold separately) is generally required for backwashing operations, if this cleaning method is preferred over manual disassembly and cleaning.

Note: Model numbers and specifications can vary (e.g., S7MD series vs. older SD series). Always refer to the manufacturer's documentation for your specific model's precise details, D.E. requirements, and compatible valves. Flow rates are filter maximums; actual system flow depends on overall plumbing and pump capabilities.

Manufacturer Warranty

This Sta-Rite System 3® Modular D.E. Filter is covered by a Pentair (Sta-Rite's parent company) limited manufacturer's warranty. Pentair typically offers a ten (10) year pro-rated warranty on the filter tank and a one (1) year warranty from the date of original purchase on other filter components (like internal modules and manifolds) against defects in materials and workmanship, when the product is installed and operated according to Pentair/Sta-Rite guidelines. This warranty generally excludes consumable items such as D.E. filter powder and O-rings, and does not cover damage resulting from improper installation, freezing, misuse, incorrect water chemistry, or normal wear and tear. Labor and shipping costs are commonly excluded. Warranty terms may be enhanced if the product is purchased from an authorized dealer and professionally installed and registered. For complete and specific terms, conditions, and limitations, please refer to the official Pentair/Sta-Rite warranty documentation included with your product or available on their website.

⚠️ Safety & Compliance Notes

Filter Operates Under High Pressure:

  • **CRITICAL:** Before any service (including opening, cleaning, or adjusting clamps/lids), turn OFF the pump and relieve ALL system pressure by opening the air relief valve on the filter. Wait until the pressure gauge reads zero and all pressure is released. Pressurized air or water can cause the filter lid/tank to separate with violent force, leading to severe injury, death, or property damage.
  • Never attempt to tighten, loosen, or service any part of the filter (clamps, lid, valves) while the system is pressurized or the pump is running.
  • Stand clear of the filter during pump start-up and shutdown. Ensure all clamps and closures are properly and securely fastened before operation.

Professional Installation & Service:

  • Installation, maintenance, and repair should be performed by a qualified pool service professional in accordance with all applicable local codes, ordinances, and manufacturer instructions.

D.E. Handling:

  • When handling Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.), wear a dust mask and eye protection to avoid inhalation and irritation. Follow D.E. manufacturer's safety guidelines. Dispose of used D.E. according to local regulations.

California Proposition 65 Warning:

  • This product and the D.E. used with it may expose you to chemicals, including crystalline silica (a component of D.E.), known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. For more information, visit www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
